Spanish Language Credit
Foreign Language Proficiency
Spanish language college credit is offered through SOU for those who have completed the highest level of Spanish course available at their high school, or who are heritage speakers.
At a low per course cost, students can earn between 8-20 credits of college credit by taking a Spanish language exam and submitting the scores to our office. The Foreign Language Proficiency program requires pre-registration through your high school.
Who is eligible?
The Foreign Language Proficiency program is open to graduating high school seniors who are currently enrolled in Spanish Level 3, 4, 5 or AP Spanish. Juniors currently enrolled in the highest level their high school offers, and/or Spanish heritage speakers are also eligible for the program.

Students who are interested in the program would follow the steps below to particpate:
Depending on test results, students can earn credit from the following courses:
Each course is worth four quarter credits.
What is the cost?
Foreign Language Proficiency is a flat-rate fee of $315. Students can earn anywhere between 8 and 20 college credits for the Spanish courses; however, they will only pay a total of $315. School districts may be able to assist students who demonstrate financial need.
A one-time $25 registration fee is required upon signup.
Do the courses transfer to other schools?
Foreign Language Proficiency credits are transcribed as Credit By Examination (CBE) on the official SOU transcript. Some schools opt to not accept CBE courses; therefore, we encourage students to reach out directly to the school that they intend to enroll in to ensure that the credits transfer before registering for the exam.
