Academic Competition

Test Your Knowledge
Hosted by the Southern Oregon University Mathematics Department, Southern Oregon Mathematics League (SOML) offers a series of competitions throughout the year. During the competition, high school students are tested on their mathematics ability in areas such as:

Logic & Deductive Reasoning
Functions & Graphs
Quadratic Equations
Systems of Linear Equations
Team Problems

Individual and team scores are calculated throughout the meets with awards presented at the final competition in the spring.

2024-2025 SOML events will be held in the Stevenson Union on the Southern Oregon University campus.

Tuesday, October 8
9:30 am – 11:45 am
Topics: Inequalities, Logic and Deductive Reasoning and Ratio & Proportion. Team event is a surprise

Tuesday, November 5
9:30 am – 11:45 am
Topics: Problem Solving, Functions & Graphs and Applications of Algebra. Team event is a surprise

Tuesday, February 11
9:30 am – 11:45 am
Topics: Roots of Polynomials, Systems of Linear Equations (no calculators) and Volume. Team event is a surprise.

Tuesday, March 11
9:30 am – 11:45 am
Topics: Statistics (mean, med, mode, standard deviation), Applications of Trigonometry, Logs and Exponential Functions. Team event is a surprise

Tuesday, April 15
9:30 am – 2:30 pm
Topics: All events are surprises!

Get Involved
The following high schools participate in our SOML competitions: Ashland, Butte Falls Charter, Cascade Christian, Eagle Point, Gold Beach, Grants Pass, Henley, Illinois Valley, Klamath Union, North Valley, Phoenix, South Medford, and St. Mary’s.

Students who attend these institutions should inquire with their administration or teacher about how to get involved.

We encourage new high schools that wish to participate in the program to contact our Youth Program staff directly.
