College Coursework for High School Students
Advanced Southern Credit (ASC) for Educators
Advanced Southern Credit provides college-level coursework from Southern Oregon University, delivered in high schools by approved instructors. In most cases, students can enroll in either four or eight quarter credits for each high school course. The curriculum is endorsed and supervised by university faculty and academic departments, ensuring course substance and transferability of credits.
For partnership opportunities or to learn more about SOU’s dual credit programming, contact Miranda Stiles at stilesm1@sou.edu.
About Advanced Southern Credit
Student Eligibility
Advanced Southern Credit (ASC) courses are exclusively accessible through an approved high school and a designated university-aligned high school instructor. To qualify for college credit through Southern Oregon University, students must be enrolled in the high school course during alignment and register for ASC credit the same term.
Southern Oregon University provides more than 300 courses through ASC in high schools in Oregon and California. We currently partner with the following schools:
Ashland, Baker Web Academy, Brookings Harbor. Cascade Christian, Clackamas, Colton, Crater, Days Creek Charter School, Durham, Eagle Point. Enterprise, Forest Grove, Grants Pass, Harrisburg, Hidden Valley, Klamath Union, Knappa, Lowell, Madras, Milwaukie, North Medford, Phoenix, Redmond, Ridgeview, Rogue River, South Medford, St Mary’s School, and Yreka Union.

ASC Courses for 2026-2027
The following lists of courses represent the current Advanced Southern Credit (ASC) courses offered at our partner high schools.
ASC classes at the high school sync with one or more terms of credit at SOU by aligning with a university course and its description, content, and learning objectives. ASC credits are transcripted exactly the same as if students took these courses at SOU, so the content being delivered in the ASC high school classroom must match the SOU course credit being offered, and alignment is approved by university faculty in the aligning department. SOU department faculty and the Chairs make the final decision for alignment; however, we encourage schools to reach out to the SOU Youth Programs office if they wish to propose a class that is not currently being offered through ASC.
A ‘Z’ at the end of a course name, such as WR 121Z, denotes that it is approved for Common Course Numbering (CCN), a statewide transfer initiative through the Higher Education Coordinating Commission.
All course descriptions can be found in the University catalog at catalog.sou.edu.

Course Costs
The cost per credit hour is set at one quarter of the undergraduate, in-state tuition rate. For the 2026 – 2027 school year, the ASC tuition rate is $60.00 per credit hour. Most ASC courses are four credits, or $240.00 per course. Please note that some courses may differ in credits, so tuition will be assessed at the credit hour rate. Example: PH 201 General Physics I and PH 224 General Physics I Laboratory is a total of five credits, or $300.00. No additional fees are assessed.
A student who meets one or more of the following criteria is eligible for a 30 percent tuition reduction:
By receiving a tuition reduction, a student’s four-credit course would be lowered by 30 percent. All the courses registered for that term will be eligible for the tuition reduction.

AP versus ASC
Advanced Placement
Advanced Placement (AP) courses are typically year-long classes that require an exam to assess a student’s eligibility for college credit. The exam is evaluated by the College Board and assigned a score ranging from 1 to 5, with 3 commonly considered a passing score for most colleges. To determine the specific scores needed for college credit at SOU, refer to Credits though Course and Exam Equivalency.
Advanced Southern Credit
Advanced Southern Credit is granted to students based on the grade they achieve in a term or year-long course, rather than a comprehensive multi-hour exam. If enrolled in ASC, an ‘A’ grade in WR 111Z through ASC would translate to an ‘A’ grade for WR 111Z on an SOU transcript.
Pursuing Both AP and ASC
Students are encouraged to pursue ASC credit and take the AP exam. This dual approach can be advantageous as it maximizes students’ chances of receiving college credit from their future institution.

How to Propose an ASC Course
Each high school teacher who wishes to align with SOU’s ASC program must submit a course proposal that showcases their professional qualifications and explains how their course plans to align with the university curriculum and rigor.
For each course proposal, teachers would submit their credentials and course content to our online registration portal, Ideal-Logic (see “Documents Needed” drop-down)
Once a proposal is submitted, a team of SOU academic professors and department Chairs will review the documents and come to a consensus if the course will be approved for the ASC program.
This process from submission to final decision takes a few weeks, so it is important not to wait until the last minute to submit proposals.
